Intermediate Tracking

WHAT:

Discover the ancient art of man-tracking. This class will introduce tracking techniques of a higher skill set than is taught in a FUNSAR. This is an intensive program, with moderate to strenuous off-trail hiking. Topics covered will include:
A

  • Tracking tools: what to carry and how to use it
  • Sign detection and interpretation
  • Tracking on various groundcovers
  • Tactics used in closing the time/distance gap
  • Methods used in search and rescue
  • Identifying evasive behavior in the tracking subject
  • Tracking team security
  • Aging signs
  • Night tracking
  • Unique terminology used in tracking
  • The tracker's place in the land search incident
  • Recording and communicating finds
  • Lost person behavior
       
WHEN: February 4 - 6, 2011
Noon on Friday until 7pm on Sunday
       
WHO: Participants in this class should have attended a FUNSAR. The class will be limited to 15 participants.

HOW: To register, download this form and fax to Wake Technical Community College: 919-773-4788. There is no cost for this course for personnel of park services/public safety/search and rescue, thanks to the generosity of the North Carolina Search and Rescue Advisory Council and Wake Technical Community College. Non-affiliated students and any out-of-state students will be required to pay a fee of $65 to Wake Tech in advance for participation. No one not pre-registered is allowed to participate in any class activities.
   
WHAT TO BRING : A cold-weather sleeping bag and a cot if you would like one; a folding chair for outdoors; SAR Pack; your personal tracking pack and walking stick; pen and notebook; snacks and water. Dinners will be provided.
